#1015 Summer of Code?

liamstask Tue 9 Mar 2010

Maybe this is a bit pointless since I don't think I could mentor (I might be able to sign up to do some review or oversight), but I thought I'd float the idea of Fantom applying to Google Summer of Code. Could be an interesting way to get some more visibility for the project, and see some progress in areas that need it. Just to start the conversation, I thought I'd list a couple of possible projects:

  • true REPL
  • crypto pod
  • more IDE tooling, Eclipse, whatever else?
  • cloud-based pod repo/distribution app
  • Fantom on another platform (LLVM, Python, etc

http://socghop.appspot.com has some info - I'd also be willing to help with some of the signup stuff as well. Apparently the deadline is the 12th though, so we'd have to be quick!

For this, we need students to apply... Is there any students involved with Fantom at the moment?

Yes, a couple of interns at Xored - 2 finishing BS degree and 1 MS

Moreover our MS and BS stud working on Eclipse based IDE, while another doing some early stage research on LLVM as a backend

I'm a student. What exactly is the Summer of Code, though?

Let me google that for you :)

In a nutshell, it's a yearly program where Google recruits a bunch of college students to work on open source projects. The projects get free labor. The students get free experience for their resume. And Google keeps an eye out for new recruits.

For Fantom, it would be a good way to get exposure. But I don't think it's all that critical.

Organizations need to apply first, then students are matched later with accepted organizations, so this shouldn't hold anything up at this point. The lack of mentor volunteers would be a show stopper though, as I understand it.
