hi what do you think about having and irc channel (eg #fandev)? When I'm a complete beginner trying to get the stuff running, I always appreciate this kind of direct communication and prefer it to a forum. dani

I have mixed feelings - but would prefer to use the forum to build up a nice knowledge base

You can use it and log the messages (to the forum) so they would be searchable. It might have a high noise ratio but it is an option. I'm not exactly sure how its configured, but I know that some IRC channels do that.

I'm open to setting one up if there is interest - not sure we have the critical mass yet though.

Not related to an IRC channel, but the remark about critical mass made me curious. Are there any known figures for the number of downloads per build and the number of registered users/unique readers of the forum?

The download per build is available at Google Code:
There are about 71 registered users on Fandev. The logs don't track ip address at the moment, so hard to say what the unique number of readers is.
So we have a long way to go. Brian is at the JVM Summit this week, which hopefully will get Fan some good PR.

I think fan needs conscious developers more than a criticall mass of users right now. There is a risk that if users will find it too incomplete they would lose their interest for a long time (year or two at least). There is plenty of other modern languages to care about (ruby, scala etc.). But JVM Summit is definitely a good place to go in this respect.
EDIT: I was thinking about #fandev a bit more and it sounds like a good idea after all -- IF important discussions were brought back to Fan forum (summarized). Then it could help to transform vague ideas into interesting new topics. And maybe it would shy away less people than a register form ;).
I like the way forums are right now so I'd be opposed cluttering them with IRC logs. Making a summary by hand has always much better outcome and it is just marginally more work...
