#810 What do we have here?

lindsten Wed 11 Nov 2009

Hi everyone!

I just learned about Fan by coincident and had check it out. I must say, what I've seen so far is really interesting!

I've been looking for this "perfect" language for a long time. I want a language I can be truly proficient in and use for anything (I only have the spare time to keep up with one, barely that).

I used to like C++, but after using Java for a while I promised myself I would never go back. Then, just as I had turned into a Java enthousiast, I got a job as a C# developer. Now after a few years of C# I'm starting to see a lot of annoyances when I'm using Java and I miss some of the C# features. At the same time I don't really like C# and I miss a lot from Java (like platform independency, which is important to me).

While struggling to decide which one is my favorite, I'm hoping some new language will come along and solve my problem. I've read about (though not tried) most newcomers out there, but haven't found anything really appealing yet. However, Fan looks like it's on the right track, which makes me really excited (as you can tell, sorry for all this rubbish!).

Unfortunately, I'm a little troubled about the name. In Swedish, "Fan" is the name of the devil (as in another word for "Satan") as well as the most common curse word. Although I personally find it kind of funny, I expect it would be an obstacle at work. I wouldn't want to suggest to our customers that we should use this new language called Fan (read "Satan") for the new project.

I just wanted you to know...

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to following the progress of Fan!

/ Mikael

Thanks for the positive feedback Mikael. Please post any questions or issues you run across on this site.

There was a huge long running debate about the name. We sort of tentatively came up with the new name Fantom, but no one has tried to acquire the new domain (held by a squatter). Although seeing all the discussion on the new Go language and how bad a name it is, sort of got me thinking about our name change again.

I doubt there is a word: which abbreviation is Fan, doesn't resemble a curse word on some language and is an unoccupied by a web domain.

Language naming thread is here btw. I was just thinking, since Fan is fantastic, but perhaps not the name so much - how about Tastic? I can already envision various frameworks named elestic, xenic... :)

I would suggest just using fantomdev.org instead of fantom.org and save ourselves the cost and hassle.

Btw this thing with Swedish reminds me Ada language. In Russian "Ada" sounds like genitive case of "Hell", so basically it sounds like "language from hell" :)

I'm glad to hear there's been a discussion about the name, means I'm not the only one objecting ;) ...and sorry for not browsing through the forums before posting, I was too eager to let you know!

I really like Fantom! It has a powerful sound and also kind of expresses that it won't "be in your way"... like a phantom... you know, immaterial... anyway, I like it! =)

They want 900 USD for fantom.org, no way to get that sponsored? Another alternative is perhaps fantom-lang.org (like Ruby, Scala etc has done)?

DanielFath Wed 11 Nov 2009

Yeah, but on the flip side someone else might find Fantom even more offensive than Fan.

Personally the more of these arguments I see the more I'm sure the name should stay Fan.

MoOm Wed 11 Nov 2009

I quite agree with Daniel. To me, Fantom sounds too negative and too "underground". How about "Fancy"?

We should probably keep name change discussion in the other thread so it's all in one place.
